GB Nationals, 5th/6th June, Bath
  • I was wondering if anyone knew for definite which teams are coming, it's getting pretty close to the date so would be good to know which teams are in. Also, why is the GBFUA website so quiet these days??

    I know Bath and Warwick are from the SW league, Vikings from the SE and Chapel from Scottish/Northern.

    I assume Sharks, Crusaders and Brighton will also be coming from SE. Also I would imagine Aberdeen might come as well from N.

    But can anyone confirm teams other than the 4 I mentioned at the top?
    Can't wait to see you all there!

    Vikings, Brighton, Sharks and Cambridge from SE, Crusaders chose not to enter.
  • Baker21Baker21 May 2010
    The last communication I was involved in stated that the following teams were down as taking part but granted this was 10 teams:

    Chapel;
    Edinburgh;
    Aberdeen;
    Cambridge;
    U19 Team;
    Vikings;
    Brighton;
    Sharks;
    Bath;
    Warwick.

    I believe the plan was for the format to be 3 groups of 3 so not sure if this has changed or another team has dropped out?

    The event is being hosted by Bath IIRC, so do you not know more Jason?

    Its not actually being hosted by Bath, Bev and Carlos have done all the bookings, schedules etc. We are helping out with the odd bits like setting up the venue but we aren't organising the tournament (or at least haven't been asked to). Carlos did send around a provisional schedule a while ago with an outline of the format, so if I can find that I'll send it over to you.

    I think initially it was 4 groups of 3, playing on 2 rinks on the Saturday, then on the Sunday all the playoffs are on a 40 x 20m rink up the middle of the hall. It was supposed to be 5 SE Teams, 3 SW, 3 Northern and the U19 side making up the 12 I think, but any open spaces are possibly available for other teams to apply for.

    The information that Carlos sent around was the one that I had also viewed so all the above seems to fall into place although it seems we may not have 12 teams but I guess we will have to wait to see the final schedule that I assume will be disclosed next week.......:D
  • I think what you mean Baker is that we'll find out who thinks they're playing when they turn up and hope that they have been included :p

    I'm glad we all seem to know so much. I mean we have 9 teams which make sense - I don't see the point of trying to find 2 others as well as including the U19s. If the format is this relaxed, with the U19s being allowed to play despite not being a league member, can we call on some outside players? We would've asked James Langmead to play for us again if the SW cup wasn't cancelled (again, with no notice).

    Oh well, we'll have to wait until next Friday before any real information is released no doubt :o

    Couldn't comment on your first statement mate..........;)

    U19 was always planned to be part of the set up but as stated but could not be eligible for the ECQ's, I guess we will have to wait and see.

    It's all a bit of a joke if any team can turn up as the GB Nationals should be teams that have played in the league all year turning up and playing teams from other leagues to crown the best side, then they go to represent the UK at the ECQ's, the question is will it ever be anyone other than Cobras or Vikings who do this?

    Maybe this year it will be another team but having training with Vikings, they have some seriously good players now..........;)
  • They are looking good this season, but they have been beaten twice (3 times?) so it shows that they can have a bad day, but I would expect them to bring a strong squad!
    I obviously don't know how any of the Scottish teams are playing, having not seen them play but I know some other SE teams are looking good and are winning the tough games.

    I'm not writing us or Warwick off of course but we always struggle with players - even when it's in Bath because everyone has either already finished or finish this week so some are heading home and others just want to get drunk or something.

    But it will certainly prove to be an interesting tournament, can't wait!

    Very dissappointed with the turnout from both North and South of the Border, bit of a joke really..........:(
  • hluravenhluraven June 2010
    Wow, what's happened to cause that drop in numbers?

    Very dissapointing.

    Not sure to be honest, I do know that a lot of teams have been struggling for numbers with some teams wanting to join forces, which I don't agree with.

    Unsure why the Sharks and Crusaders aren't in attendance but I do believe that Aberdeen and Edinburgh were short on players..........:(
  • WTF, this is such a joke. Not only will we only get 4 games max for £250, but us (Bath), Vikings and Chapel are all in the same group on the Saturday meaning the winners from each league will play eachother first so one team will get knocked out in that round - what was the point of the league?!
    We might as well play eachother once and have it won that way, then each team would get 5 games as opposed to some getting 3 and others getting 4. Especially for the teams having to come from Scotland.

    I'm thoroughly annoyed with all the teams that have dropped out - if us and Warwick can get teams together when we've either got exams or people having left because they've finished, it's ridiculous that other people couldn't make a team.

    Absolute farce!

    'Team'...............have to agree mate it is shocking!!!

    the problem you have with some teams in scotland is that there full off students and at this time of year they are away home,

    last week an email was sent out asking about other teams/players making up numbers but due to such short notice and the balwearie guys doing a charity event there was not much response

    when did aberdeen and edinburgh pull out?

    While I appreciate that is the case it applies the same to those teams down South, seems like a lack of enthusiasm to make one trip over the border to play against some stronger opponents also wasn't that attractive............:(

    Congratulations to Vikings for another National Championships title, the most balanced team I have seen them have for a long time.
  • Vikings certainly had a great team this weekend and fully deserved yet another victory.

    Well done to all the teams that played, it's just such a shame that so many others pulled out. Bath played with few players and Warwick did the same with most of theirs injured as well.

    The GB U19s are improving so this was another good opportunity for them to get some more experience and they had some moments of good play as well.

    Good luck to the Vikings in Oslo :)
