Floorball in London
  • f1nchf1nch February 2009
Hi, I'm a student in a London university, but not a Brit, from Singapore. Average floorball player, been playing for a few years. Was wondering what the standard of London clubs are like and if they are willing to take in players that might not have had any league experience like myself. I captain my uni's team but we are pretty much a recreational club.

Anyone with the knowledge of the above? Any help would be lovely mates, my weekends get boring.

Hi, there are three floorball teams in London. The best team is London Vikings who win the British championships nearly every year. They are mainly Scandinavians and are mostly for experienced players. They train in East London on Sundays.

There is also the London Sharks and the London Crusaders who both play in the same tournaments. The Sharks train in West London on Tuesdays and Southwest London on Saturdays.

The Crusaders train on Monday and Thursdays in South London, and already have a few Singaporeans training regularly. They certainly welcome players of all standards and sound the most suitable depending on the travelling. I'm happy to give you any more info via this or PM, or come along to training tonight.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.
I'm still not very sure whether I'm good enough for league play yet, so I will think about it. Where do the Crusaders train? From what you wrote, they certainly sound the most attractive; I don't know much about the sharks but I know the Vikings are a class up there.

What time is training tonight? Maybe I would drop by to take a look.
Anyone I can get in contact with for further enquiries?
  • hluravenhluraven February 2009
There is no requirement to play in the league games unless/until you are ready. My wife has been training for 2 years but has chosen to never play a league game for example.

Crusaders train in Streatham from 7-9pm tonight, venue details @ http://www.londoncrusaders.co.uk/Venues.html

http://www.londoncrusaders.co.uk/Contact.html gives an e-mail and a mobile number for more information.

    Hope to see you tonight

I've been following this kind of on the news, but 2 inches of snow shutting down an entire transit system? Lol.

Just had to have my laugh.

    Cheers,

i laughed louder (to myself, for avoiding harsh consequences) when everyone was slipping and tripping trying to walk at their normal quick-london pace! we are obviously not used to snow, ice and sleet lol.

Does anyone know where you can buy floorball sticks in London. In a shop rather than online?

Any help would be much appreciated

    Paavo

P.S. I live in South Kensington
  • hluravenhluraven February 2009
There is no shop in London that sells any floorball stuff at all, in fact there is no shop in Britain that does.

Buying online or from one of the London clubs is the only way to actually get anything in London.
  • Your best bet for a club in London Is London Sharks. They have the biggest number of members, are the best organized and are the only team that is fully supported by a major manufacturer. This means cheap sticks and lots of perks thanks to the sponsors. We welcome players of all standards and have players from top Swedish leagues doing the coaching :)

As well as having two teams ready for next season some players just play for fun but the most important part about being a Shark is that we all hang out together outside the rink. We go for dinner, drinks poker night etc etc making us all good mates and this shows in the team spirit.

We are the SE league Champions and more recently lost 3-2 on golden goal in the National championships to a team made up of 50% Vikings 50% Crusaders that called themselves Vikings. It was a close game but the first time someone gave the Viking all-star team such a hard time. We were the only 100% pure team in the top 3. The others opted to strengthen their lines with top players from teams not attending.

So, if you want to play Floorball and have a really good time doing it, come check out Sharks training.

p.s Sharks have a stock of sticks for sale all year round alternatively www.ultimatefloorball.co.uk can help, but I think that answers a different post.

Cheers and hope to see you in the rink.

I am going to study in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire and am wondering what the best club for me is. I'm looking for a high level club that plays in a league as well. Is a London based club an option for me when I have to travel by public transport? Or are there other options?
  • hluravenhluraven June 2009
Your nearest team to Wycombe would be Oxford University, who do take non-Oxford Uni students into their side and may be your best bet. They finished third in the British national championship so are one of the better sides in the country.

Other than Oxford, the 3 London teams all play at a high level, finishing first and second in the nationals from the two that entered. The details are earlier in this thread for those three teams but in summary, the Vikings are the best team in GB, winning the English league title every year in their existance and the British championship almost every time they enter. The Sharks are a new team but have made a great start winning the South-east league and coming second in the Nationals. The Crusaders are the other option, they finished third in the South-east league last season and their details are also earler in the thread.

The London teams all train on different nights, so you could trial all of them and see which one fits best for you.
  • I would like to point out at this point that Vikings took an hybrid team up to the nationals made up of some of their players plus extra top players borrowed from other clubs who did not go. Hardly a team and hardly surprising that they won although it was by golden goal in the second period of extra time. So despite them having been the best team for a long time, I honestly don't feel that to be the case any longer. They are very good but the Sharks are now their equals and, we had our regular team rather than an "All Star Hybrid". As far as teams that play at high level, Vikings and Sharks are your only real option who do things properly. I am sure both Sharks and Vikings would be happy to welcome you should you choose to play with a London team. Oxford are really good too and came 3rd at the Nationals.
Their websites can be found on www.gbfua.org.uk under clubs by region and click on the logos to go to the sites.

On a last note Sharks are te only English team with comprehensive Sponsorship deals with a major Floorball equipment manufacturer and not sport related sponsors. This makes it the most interesting team to play for as it allows for much subsidisation when it comes to kit, sticks and tournaments abroad.

    The choice is yours.
    :)

    Thanks for the information.

Since I have to travel by public transport I'll have to find out which club is easier to get to. Do you guys have any idea?
  • johanjohan August 2009
www.floorballkit.com / you can order online but the sticks are in London so you can always pick them up near St pauls on central line (by now I guess you got yourself a stick already though...).

Hi - I captain the London Vikings (which is the UK no.1 team since early 2000) and you are welcome to come and try out playing with us if you like. We train on Wednesday evenings near Oval tube (zone 2 on northern line). Usually works to get a lift to/from central, west or east London, in particular on your way home. Check out: www.london-vikings.co.uk

You lost, you need to get over it.

The way I see it, by mixing the teams The Vikings would have got weaker and not stronger... The players were not used to playing together and the replacement players were from a team that you beat twice in the league...

Can't really see how that would benefit them as opposed to having their regular players...

It appears you will be in the same league as them this year, hopefully that will clear out any ?-marks.

    Best of luck! ;)

To be honest, your best bet is to get any of the thousands of tourist buses on your first day. This will show you all the main sights along with a bit of information and you can go back to any you would want to see more.

There are some great teams around London and for me it has to be the best place now to be located to join one of the stronger teams in GB........

now i am really looking forward to play "the only English team with comprehensive Sponsorship deals with a major Floorball equipment manufacturer"

    PS:sorry guys i just couldn't help myself!!! :-)
  • 13thedevil13thedevil February 2010
It was 100% a weaker side fielded by the Vikings at last years nationals and there full sqaud would of won that final everday of the week by a much more convincing margin!

    Great white(HYPE)!!
